Authentic Muga Silk Mekhla Chador Set with Natural Dyed Eri Silk Motifs from Assam

A genuine handloom Muga Silk Mekhla Chador set from our looms in Assam , India .

It has Muga Silk yarns in the weft and warp and all interwoven motifs are in Natural dyed Eri Silk yarns .

Both Muga Silk and Eri Silk are indigenous to the NE region of India and Muga Silk is almost exclusive to Assam . 

The Mekhla and Chador is a  traditional 2 piece dress from the North East State of Assam, India . The Mekhla is  appx 1.20 Mt in length and 37" width when stiched. The Warp will have pleats when worn. The top part or 'chadar ' is a shawl or half -sari which is used to cover the upper portion of the body and is worn on top of the mekhla or wrap. The usual size is 3 Meters long and about 37 inches in width.

Muga Silk - The most valued silk from India. Almost exclusively reared and produced in Assam, India. It is indigenous to the Brahmaputra Valley and assiduously practiced in the districts of Assam. The moth is basically a wild moth. Hence it is categorised as Vanya Silk or Wild silk by the silk board of India.(http://csb.gov.in/silk-sericulture/silk/vanya-silk/)

The yarn produced is a natural rich golden yellow or light brown colour depending on  the host plant it feeds on. These are unique products. Muga silks resist sunshine and are more durable than mulberry silks. Muga silks can be termed Organic as no harmful chemicals have been used in the cultivation of host trees or in the processing of silk fabrics.  No dyes are applied to the yarns. The golden colour is its natural colour. Most Muga rearing and cultivation is still done by village clusters in Assam in the traditional method. 

 Muga Silk also tend to be slightly fluffy which over a period will settle down. 

Please note that there is some colour difference between the upper Chador and the bottom Mekhela as it is possible that wild silk yarns especially hand reeled yarns naturally comes with these inconsistencies in colour and texture.

Wash Care - Dry Clean due to the presence of Natural dyed Eri silk yarns in the motifs.

As with all silks - Store in cool place and Dry Place. 

We try to capture the exact colours but due to factors like lightning and the nature of silks , there may be slight difference in colour between the actual product and that in the image.
