This is a silk stole. Locally they are known as gamuchas . Traditionally , they were made from cotton in the classic white and red combinations . They are ceremonial items used regularly as part of religious ceremonies , wedding ceremonies and as a piece of offerings . The cotton ones are regularly and commonly used as towels but the silks are strictly ceremonial and these days used as a fashion statement .
This particular piece has mulberry silk ( locally known as Pat Silk ) in the warp and weft .
