Grey Natural  Dyed Traditional Mekhela Chador Set from our looms in Assam , India .

The Mekhla and Chador is a traditional 2 piece dress from the North East State of Assam, India . The Mekhla is appx 1.20 Mt in length and 37" width when stitched. The Warp will have pleats when worn. The top part or 'chadar ' is a shawl or half -sari which is used to cover the upper portion of the body and is worn on top of the mekhla or wrap. The usual size is 3 Meters long and about 37 inches in width.

The set has Raw Mulberry Silk in the warp and Eri silk in the weft and all the interwoven motifs in natural off white Eri Silk and Muga ghicha silk. Raw Mulberry Silk is colloquially known as 'Nooni '  or 'Kesa Pat' in the region . 

Since Eri Silk is there, the set does not have the typical sheen that is associated with Silks from India. Eri Silk is an indigenous Silk variety from India found in Assam and some other North Eastern States. The lack of sheen is typical of Eri Silks. Eri Silk is also known as peace silk or Ahimsa silk .

Eri Silk looks and feels like cotton but has the unique properties of silk . Eri Silk is a all weather silk and Eri creates a very unique texture . The presence of raw silk gives a crisp hand feel to the set . 

The set is very lightweight and easy to handle.

Eri silks are easier to care for than mulberry or Tassar. They also have anti fungal properties that makes it excellent for anyone with skin allergies towards silks or other fibres.
