Handwoven Eri Silk Scarf / Stole from Assam , India
Natural dyed with locally available plant dyes and woven on basic looms.
The Eri silk used here are mill spun eri silk yarns in the warp and handspun yarns in the weft. . Because of mill spun yarns , the texture is smoother and uniform . The blend of mill spun yarns and hand spun yarns gives these textiles very unique texture .
Eri silk is procured from the caterpillar Samia Cynthia Ricini and is found in the north eastern state of Assam and nearby region.
Eri Silk inherently does not have any bright sheen as it is always spun silk . It always has a very subtle sheen . It looks and drapes like cotton but has all the inherent silk properties.
These scarves have gone through the process of calendaring to smoothen the texture .
Eri Silk is easier to take care of than other more delicate silks like Mulberry Silks. If properly taken care of and stored in cool and dry place , It will last a lifetime.
The production of Eri Silk yarns are still majorly an indigenous activity of the tribal people of the region and the dyeing / weaving activities are mostly village activities that employs a large no of women from the villages.
Eri Silk also has anti fungal properties , hence ideal for anyone who has skin allergies.
